Ever sat in a restaurant nattering away over a cocktail only to miss a call as your phone vibrated in your handbag? Or sat through a meeting while waiting on an important email but didn’t want to look rude by phone-checking every five minutes? This little gem (get it?!) has the answer.
Your Ringly ring gives a discreet alert when certain people call, text or tag you in social media. It can remind you of calendar events, buzz if you leave your phone behind, tell you your cab’s waiting outside and if you tap it it can make your phone buzz to help you find it in your bag (if your bag is anything like as crazy as mine, this will be a-m-a-z-i-n-g).
The line of 18k gold rings with precious and semi-precious stones have been designed by a jeweller (not a techie – which is SO important), so they make a fashion statement in their own right. You’d never know they were hiding cutting edge tech underneath their glam exterior.
Co-founder Christina Mercando explains, “My dad’s an engineer, and my mom has always been a creative type, so I’ve always had this left brain, right brain thing. In college, I studied both fine art and human computer interaction, and I’ve always been interested in the intersection of arts and technology, from an early age. So now, it’s coming full circle with Ringly. I always have all these crazy ideas, and I wanted to be an entrepreneur myself, so I decided that Ringly was one of those ideas. And it was the one that grew, so I decided to just do it.”
Bringing the jewellery and fashion industries together with tech industries must have been a challenge (each industry has its own priorities – that must have needed some seriously strong direction and an awesome team to guide it!), but it’s a relationship that’s going to be worth the effort.
Smart jewellery and smart accessories have been a long time coming, but I’m getting totally excited now that they’re here . It’s a massive growth industry and I know it’s the start of something huge.
Have you ordered one or are you waiting to get your hands on the Apple Watch instead? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
